Gerald Wolf

1943 in Limbach (Sachsen) geboren, studierte an der Leipziger Universität von 1962 bis 1967 Biologie und von 1962 bis 1969 Medizin. Dort auch, als Schüler von Prof.Dr.Dr.h.c. Günther Sterba, wurde er 1970 zum Dr. rer. nat. promoviert. 1979, nach seiner Habilitation zum Thema „Hypothalamo-neurohypophysäres System und Neurophysine“, erfolgte ein Ruf auf die Dozentur „Biologie für Mediziner“ an die damalige Medizinische Akademie in Magdeburg. 1981 zum „Ordentlichen Professor“ ernannt (Lehrstuhl für Biologie), wurde Gerald Wolf 1985 Direktor des Institutes für Biologie. 

1992 erfolgte eine Neuberufung als C4-Professor und mit der Eingliederung der Medizinischen Akademie in die Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg (1993) die Ernennung zum Direktor des Institutes für Medizinische Neurobiologie (bis zur Emeritierung 2008). Gerald Wolf spielte eine aktive Rolle bei der demokratischen Neugestaltung seiner Hochschule - Anfang der 90er Jahre als Prorektor und nach der Universitätsgründung, an der er maßgeblich beteiligt gewesen ist, als Prodekan der neugegründeten Medizinischen Fakultät. Von 2000 bis 2002 war er Prorektor für Forschung der Universität. Gerald Wolf ist  neben vielen weiteren Veröffentlichungen Autor von mehr als 180 Originalpublikationen, publizierte mehrere Bücher, ist populärwissenschaftlich aktiv und ein gefragter Vortragsautor (siehe "Publikationen"). Wichtige Arbeitsgebiete sind die Wirkung von Stickoxid und anderen reaktiven Stickstoff- und Sauerstoffverbindungen auf das Hirngewebe sowie die Ursachen von degenerativen Hirnerkrankungen und Möglichkeiten zu deren Verhinderung und Therapie. Daneben interessiert er sich für philosophische Aspekte der Hirnforschung und, wenn immer Zeit bleibt, für Flora und Fauna. Von Gerald Wolf sind zwei Wissenschaftsromane erschienen: „Der HirnGott“ (2005, 2008) und "Glaube mir, mich gibt es nicht" (2009).

Gerald Wolf ist verheiratet mit Hella (geb. Körner) und hat mit ihr zwei Kinder, Ronald und Antje.

Gerald Wolf,  born in 1943 in Limbach (Saxony, Germany), studied biology from 1962 to 1967 and medicine from 1962 to 1969 at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He graduated as a student and, lateron, as a coworker of Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Günther Sterba at the same University in 1970 holding the degree Dr. rer. nat. In 1979 he received the “Dr. rer. nat. habil.” (equivalent to Associate Professor) based on his thesis “Hypothalamo-Neurohypophyseal System and Neurophysins”. He joined the Medical Academy of Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt) with an assignment as a lecturer for the subject: “Biology for Medical Students”. In 1981 Wolf was promoted to hold a full professorship for Biology and, since 1985, the chair for Biology. His position as Director of the Institute for Biology was converted to a full university professorship (C4) when the Medical Academy became the Faculty of Medicine of the newly founded Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg in 1993 (Professor emeritus since 2008). In this context his institute was renamed Institute for Medical Neurobiology. After the German reunification, Gerald Wolf took an active role in the democratic reforms and restructuring of the Otto-von-Guericke University, where he served as Vice-Dean and later on as Prorector. Gerald Wolf wrote about 180 original publications, published several books and many other contributions and delivered many invited talks (see "Publikationen"). His main research interests include the amino acid neurotransmitter system, with particular emphasis on the glutamatergic neurotransmission as well as on nitric oxide and other reactive nitrogen and oxygen species mediating CNS injury. Other areas of interests are brain and behaviour, philosophical aspects of biology and psychology and, as a hobby, flora and fauna. Most recently Gerald Wolf published two novels, both related to the field of science and belief: "Der HirnGott" (2005, 2008) and "Glaube mir, mich gibt es nicht" (2009).

Gerald Wolf is married to Hella and has two children, Ronald and Antje.
